From Amy Brown:

Hello,
Thanks so much for your site and much needed information. I was a special education teacher, but after my son was diagnosed with ASD I decided to be a stay at home mom. My son was struggling with learning to read in the primary grades. He struggled with phonemic awareness and decoding skills. I got training in Orton-Gillingham and use this methodology to help him with his word attack and spelling skills. I have also begun to tutor other children using OG.

Recently, I have had parents from ASD circles inquiring about tutoring services. Their children struggle with comprehension rather than decoding. I truly want to help these parents, but I had no idea what they needed. I started searching on the web and found your sight. I have been devouring each and every nugget you post. Thank you so because there is not much out there. My son needs help in this area too. It is interesting that kids can struggle in both areas – word attack and comprehension.

Do you do any visualization and imagery with your students?

Are there any other sites besides yours where parents can get information?

From Carol Prims:
Dear Sara,
I am an autism specialist paraprofessional. I am also in grad school working on a M. ED, and a special ed teaching credential. Your experience with autism experts in school districts as behaviorists rather than educators rings a bell. I also can find endless info about ABA, but have found a real lack of info about teaching students on the spectrum to read. I ran across your website while doing a research paper for school. I have put you in my favorites and will be interested to follow what is happening on your site. I think it is really needed. Best find on the internet in a long time.
Sincerely,
Carol Prims

Barbara:
I have indeed read the article and it confirmed my concerns. I continue to be appalled at the breadth of research on behavioral issues and the dearth of work on learning issues. Thanks for your comments! Spread the word.

Have you read "Reading Comprehension INstruction for Students with Autism Sorectrum Disorders: A Review of the Literature by Hsu-Min chiang and Yeh-Hsien Lin?
Of 754 articles screened only 11 met the criteria of the review.
I think there is a lot out there without much support for its efficacy and yet we need to be doing something.
Thanks for tackling this.
